Calling individuals from all backgrounds and skills to build solutions to social and environmental challenges. Let's #BuildBackBetter together.

The Build Back Better Hackathon is bringing like-minded people together virtually over one weekend to solve social and environmental challenges.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused shockwaves around the world and exposed cracks in our systems. From the breakdown of supply chains to mass unemployment and racial disparities, things need to change!

To recover from the pandemic, we can continue to paint over the cracks, or we can #BuildBackBetter, together.

We are calling for people from all corners of society to come together and be a part of the change!

Build Back Better together

We are a collaboration of organisations working voluntarily to organise this hackathon. Our main objective is to help generate prototype solutions to the biggest challenges our society is facing and rebuild a future that is more socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable.

With this in mind, there will be no monetary prizes, but we will be offering other services - mentoring, advisory support, workshops (tbc) to the winning solutions to help them continue working on their project after the hackathon. Will will update those here as we confirm them with our partners.

We also hope to fundraise to be able to incubate the best of these solutions in the coming months and years after the hackathon - if you are interested to support us, please reach out.

Submitting to this hackathon could earn you:

Eligibility

Participants: any individual (over 18 years in age); individuals under 18 may take part if an adult responsible for their safeguarding also attends.

Countries: while the hackathon focuses on UK-based solutions, we welcome participants from anywhere around the world.

We’d love to include anyone who has had an idea to improve their lives, the lives of their family, their community or the UK as a whole. That’s everyone, right? You don’t need technical experience or qualifications - just bring your ideas and enthusiasm

Requirements

Submit a 2 minute video explaining your idea and demonstrating your prototype if you have one. Please make sure to mention which challenge you are trying to solve and have a read through the Judging Criteria.

Please watch this 6' video by Devi Clark for guidance on how to make your pitch video.

Judging Criteria

  • Impact
How will the solution benefit society and/or the environment? Can it improve the lives of many people or across a large geographical area, or will you work more locally with a few people, but affect them very deeply? How will you measure your impact?
  • Practicality
Is the idea realistic and clearly explained? Can it be further developed or implemented at reasonable cost in the near future? Can the team lead the project forward after the hackathon weekend or find someone else who could run with it?
  • Collaborative potential
Is it easy to see ways to make your solution open to others to implement in other geographical areas? Have you thought about potential partners who might be interested in working on developing the idea further?
  • Progress during the hackathon
Did the team develop a solution during the weekend? Did you document your progress, from defining the challenge you tackle to developing the idea you present? Showing your by step reflection matters more than showing a prototype without much context.
